Kissojen Katastrofiyhdistys KKY RY

(The Catastrophe Association for Cats in Peril)

was founded in 1979 to save homeless cats from getting frozen in wintertime, starving to death or becoming ill. All sexually mature homeless cats are spayed or neutered to prevent procreation. In addition, the animals are vaccinated against cat plague, and are tattooed with an identification number on their left ear lobes. The cats are then placed with responsible, caring new owners. As we take over 400 cats every year into our protection, we have many expenses.

While everyone in our association works on a volunteer basis, cat food, litter, veterinary care and medicine is expensive. That is why we organize many fundraising events. Our association also maintains a register of the identification numbers for each cat we have saved. Anyone who has lost or found a cat we have placed can contact us via phone or email to easily reunite cat and owner. Our association has grown to over some 550-600 members, who receive our newsletter Katti-Matti (Matt the Cat), published three times a year. The board of administration of our society consists of six members and two substitutes. When the cat population is too large, not every cat can find a good, responsible home. Therefore, the main purpose of our activities is to spay or neuter all cats over eight months of age in order to control the size of the overall cat population in Finland.
